>Spirit of Adoption: The Father Heart of God

Romans 8:15

For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

Throughout Jesus’ ministry He discusses following His commands. “If you love me, you will obey my commands, if you love me.” God’s logos (written word- BIBLE) mixed with a false understanding of God – namely that God, being a powerful genie sort of figure, made humans to carry out His handy work – unfortunately seems to lead many to a point where they are unwilling to accept what Jesus did.

This idea, this belief, this LIE, has been bought into by people around the globe in both Christian and Secular circles. The unwillingness to be controlled is perhaps one of the largest deterrents to what Abba wants to do in an individuals life. What a clever little trickster the devil is – he just has to point out a scripture out of context. A.W. Tozer said it best, “Satan is a better theologian than us all, but he is still a devil.” Satan knows scripture rather well, and being the father of lies, he knows exactly how to twist a verse in order to present a false jesus or a false god. God is good. He wants you. He has spent over six thousand years trying to bring His creation, YOU, back to Himself. He is your father, your papa, your ABBA. Whoa if you could only see what He had to do to become your daddy. He became flesh. God, the almighty, uncreated, unmoved, mover of the universe scraped his knee. He cried when he was hungry, and He probably played tag with his friends when he finished eating. God became flesh in Jesus, who met the law of Moses head on and was found blameless! God then looked and said, YES! This man, Jesus, can be the one last sacrifice so I can finally be with my creation. Jesus wasn’t obligated to be the sacrifice. If he wanted to, he could have walked away and said “Sorry God, I have lived a good and blameless life. I don’t think I will be climbing on that tree.” And do you know what? God would still have loved Jesus because that’s what fathers do. But Jesus loved his Daddy so much that He trusted Him and this crazy plan of His. Jesus, God’s flesh, who broke no law in the Jewish custom (and by the way, there’s books of those Try reading leviticus, deuteronomy, numbers), followed His fathers lead and became the final sacrifice, giving God adoption rights to the human race. God, the incomprehensible metaphysical anomoly, now calls you “MY SON!” “MY DAUGHTER!”.

v. 15 “We have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but we have received a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters which we cry out, ‘ABBA (PAPA)! FATHER!’ v. 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, v 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ…”

God, or more accurately, Papa, loves you. He has given you all that is His. His Joy, His Love, His Peace. He delights in YOU! In return he takes your shame and says, “You’ll get ’em next time!” He takes your pain and says “Be healed!” When you are lonely, He comes and whispers “Psst! Guess what? I Love you! hehehe”. Father delights in you, and He wants nothing more than for you to delight yourselves in Him. Trust Him, He is the best father this world has ever seen; He never leaves, He is never angry, He is never too busy. In fact, we are often too busy for Him, but guess what? He waits for us! He sits and waits patiently for that perfect opportunity to show us just how much he loves us. “Finally, we can hang out, I’ve been waiting for you. I’ve missed you so much, and I LOVE YOU!”

-Amen
